Apasiev at the dim “lighthouse” of anti-fascism
Even though Apasiev is present at the Victory Day events in Moscow, as stated in the announcement, “at the invitation of the Chairman of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) Dr. Gennady Zyuganov,” with whom he shares similar ideological convictions, today’s Russia, least of all, can be considered a “beacon” in the fight against historical revisionism and in the defense of anti-fascist values

The president of The Left, Dimitar Apasiev, is one of the few politicians from the European continent–alongside Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, and the President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik–who are currently attending the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in Moscow, the central event of which is the military parade on Red Square.
Yesterday (08.05.2025) The Left announced on their official Facebook page that Apasiev gave a speech in Victory Park in Moscow, as part of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism, stressing that The Left is fighting against historical revisionism and defending the values of the anti-fascist struggle:
“Our grandfathers, the partisans of Yugoslavia, fought side by side with the peoples of the Soviet Union against a common enemy. In the fight against fascism, we were united, and this solidarity is the basis of our historical connection, which we are obliged to preserve. In the context of contemporary international instability, it is especially important to preserve historical truth and resist attempts at historical revisionism. The victory of 1945 is a victory of anti-fascism and a victory of humanity. It is our duty to convey this truth to future generations, to strengthen peace based on respect, equality and solidarity between peoples,” The Left’s statement states.
“Truthmeter.mk” has already written about the pro-Russian disinformation that has been using World War II for the past three years as a justification for the Russian military invasion of Ukraine and its “denazification.” Such disinformation often draws parallels with historical events from the period before and during World War II as an attempt to manipulate it for one’s own benefit and goals.
Apasiev says in his speech that “in the fight against fascism we were united and that solidarity is the basis of our historical connection, which we are obliged to preserve.” No matter how conveniently celebratory speeches of this type can be, historical facts show that the fight against fascism did not always have a unifying dimension, as well as a historical connection that we were obliged to preserve.
The current pro-Russian propaganda, let us recall, promotes the narrative that the USSR liberated Poland in September 1939, not acknowledging that it actually divided it with Nazi Germany, with whom it collaborated until the mutual war that began in June 1941.
On the other hand, in the institutional memory of North Macedonia–not only as a successor country to the SFRY, but also as an active participant in the foreign policy of the Yugoslav Federation from 1944 to 1991–a prominent place is occupied by the year 1948 and the breakup of Tito’s Yugoslavia with the political doctrine of Stalin’s USSR, precisely the same country with which Apasiev argues we should preserve the historical connection.
The narrative from the arsenal of pro-Russian disinformation that the USSR practically single-handedly won victory against a united “Nazi Europe”–despite the historical facts that the United Kingdom, the United States, and Free France played a key role in the victory over Nazi Germany, while simultaneously providing strong logistical support to the USSR–has recently been supplemented by the claim that historical memory is being systematically destroyed, especially in Ukraine and the Baltic countries.
The contemporary international instability, which Apasiev emphasizes in his speech, has been disrupted for the past three years precisely by his host, who launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on February 22, 2022. The leader of The Left says that we need to “strengthen peace based on respect, equality, and solidarity between peoples,” and he does so precisely in the epicenter of the country that uses the memory of Victory Day as an excuse to justify its military invasion of a neighboring country and to “denazify” it.
Even though Apasiev is present at the Victory Day events in Moscow, as stated in the announcement, “at the invitation of the Chairman of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) Dr. Gennady Zyuganov,” with whom he shares similar ideological convictions, today’s Russia, least of all, can be considered a “beacon” in the fight against historical revisionism and in the defense of anti-fascist values.
