The EU didn’t ignite a bloody war in Ukraine, Russia did

Support for Ukraine is consistent with its right to self-defense. It is inaccurate to say that the EU or any European country provoked the military invasion. Russia was not attacked by anyone, rather, it was Russia that attacked Ukraine

We analyze a Facebook post which says:

Those poor EU guys, they’re burning their pants off!
They are deciding on Ukraine?
1800 BILLION EUROS GIVEN FOR ARMS, because they were for peace!?
Or is it for bloodshed?
SHAME ON YOU, YOU IGNITED A BLOODY WAR ON THE SOIL OF EUROPE!? And that’s after the greatest bloodshed of WW2!
IT IS EVIDENT THAT FEEBLEMINDEDNESS RUNS IN YOUR GENES, IN YOUR IMBECILITY, BUT ALSO IN THE MALICE AGAINST SLAVISM!
Biden and the Deep State are swindling you like imbeciles.
Well, you can’t mess around with Trump, he does not deal with stupid blockheads!
Contrary to the statement, it was not the EU but Russia that ignited the bloody war in Ukraine. NATO and EU Member States have provided assistance in Ukraine’s right to defend itself.

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine, challenging Ukrainians’ aspirations for a better future, and for getting closer to the EU. This was an attack, not just against Ukraine, but against freedom, self-determination, and democracy.

Ever since the beginning of the war, the EU has stood up for Ukraine with unwavering commitment. We have provided the country with unprecedented political, financial, military and humanitarian support and have welcomed millions of Ukrainians seeking refuge in the Member States, says the website of the European Commission.

Support for Ukraine is consistent with its right to self-defense. It is inaccurate to say that the EU or any European country provoked the military invasion. In fact, Russia was not attacked by anyone.
Russia started the war against Ukraine without being threatened by Ukraine or any other country in Europe.

Russia started its war against Ukraine without being threatened by Ukraine or any other country in Europe. It illegally annexed Crimea in 2014 and proceeded to seize territory in Donetsk and Luhansk. And in 2022, with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War 2. Russia has struck hospitals, schools, and shopping malls. Russia bombs civilian power and water infrastructure. Russia is killing Ukrainian civilians. Ukraine has the right, and the responsibility, to protect its people. Self-defense is a fundamental right, which is enshrined in the UN Charter. And NATO has the right to support Ukraine as it seeks to uphold its right to self-defense and to prevail as a sovereign state in Europe. Self-defense and the support of self-defense is in line with international law, says NATO’s website.

Prior to Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine in 2014, there was no permanent deployment of multinational NATO troops in the eastern part of the Alliance. As the security environment changed after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of eastern Ukraine, NATO broke off practical cooperation with Russia, while maintaining political and military dialogue, and deployed four multinational combat groups to the Baltic states and Poland in 2016.

As a reaction to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO reinforced its deterrence and defense posture. We doubled the number of multinational battlegroups in the east of the Alliance from four to eight. We will continue to do what is needed to protect and defend all Allies.

Russia’s aggressive actions are undermining international security and stability. As well as its aggression against Ukraine, Russia has military bases and soldiers in Georgia and Moldova without the consent of the governments of these countries, NATO says.

After Russia attacked Ukraine, the country began defending itself, as its citizens refused to accept being forcibly annexed by Russia. The European Council on February 9, 2023 asked Russia to withdraw from the territory that is not its own and that it entered (Ukraine), but this did not happen.

Russia must stop its atrocious war immediately. The European Union will stand by Ukraine with steadfast support for as long as it takes, stated the conclusions of the European Council from February 9, 2023.

EU leaders have repeatedly called on Russia to cease its military actions, unconditionally withdraw all forces and military equipment from Ukraine and fully respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.

The post falsely claims that the EU gave 1,800 billion euros for weapons to Ukraine. The EU and its 27 member states have provided Ukraine with $145 billion in financial, military, humanitarian, and refugee aid since the war began. So not all of that money ($145 billion) is for weapons. In February 2024, European leaders agreed to provide $54 billion by 2027 to enable Ukraine’s recovery, reconstruction, and modernization, as well as its efforts to implement reforms as part of the EU accession path.

It cannot be said with certainty whether there would have been more or less bloodshed without EU’s military assistance. Hypothetically, there could have been more bloodshed without Western military assistance. In such a situation, Russia might have gained more Ukrainian territory, more cities and villages, and there might have been more crime. The Russian military is known to have killed innocent civilians, such as in Bucha.

The case of Ukrainian prisoners of war being executed by Russia is known. If the front had expanded to a larger part of Ukraine, no one can say whether such crimes would have increased or decreased.

Thus, it cannot be said with certainty that “military aid ignited a bloody war on the soil of Europe”. It may have reduced casualties by stabilizing the front line and resisting in a way that contributed to fewer civilian deaths.

Moreover, if the thesis that “war aid ignites war” is promoted, then the EU cannot be solely blamed. The US has also given military aid which according to the State Department’s website amounts to $65.9 billion.

Military aid is also provided by Norway, which is not an EU member, as well as South Korea, which is also not an EU member, and furthermore, by North Macedonia.

Taking all of this into account, we assess the post as untrue.
