There is no “mobilization” of NATO
The title of the text shared in the post contains the word “mobilization”, which is associated with the fact that what is happening in Russia is also happening in NATO after President Putin’s decision to mobilize 300 thousand of people to fight in Ukraine. On the contrary, in the content part of the text of the article, it is reported that the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, at a meeting with directors of national armaments of the countries of the Alliance, discussed replenishing the stocks of weapons depleted by deliveries to Ukraine. It is then added that the Secretary-General called for restocking to continue as quickly as possible and to continue providing military and financial aid to Kyiv. Thus, there is no “mobilization” in NATO, the Alliance itself is not at war with Russia but supports the Ukrainian right to self-defence
We are reviewing a post published on the social network Facebook, which shares a media article with the title:
Mobilization of NATO? Stoltenberg called on all members to immediately fill their stocks with weapons!
The title of the text contains the word “mobilization”, which makes this title out of context and it can be implying that NATO is happening the same thing as in Russia after the decision of President Vladimir Putin to mobilize 300 thousand to fight in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On the contrary, in the content part of the text, it is reported that the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, at a meeting with directors of national armaments of the countries of the Alliance, discussed replenishing the stocks of weapons depleted by deliveries to Ukraine. The myth that the Russian side wants to spread to the public is that NATO is at war with Russia in Ukraine. The facts are that NATO is not at war with Russia and does not seek confrontation with Russia. NATO actually supports Ukraine’s right to self-defence.
Over the past months, we have taken strictly defensive measures to increase the presence of NATO troops in the eastern part of the Alliance. This ensures that there is no room for misunderstanding in Moscow about our readiness to protect and defend all Allies. Our core task is to keep our thirty nations safe. We have a responsibility to ensure the conflict does not escalate and spread beyond Ukraine, because that would be even more devastating and more dangerous, they add.
The other myth about NATO is that it is an aggressor and a threat to Russia. NATO is a defence alliance aimed at protecting its member countries. NATO’s Official policy is that “NATO does not seek confrontation and does not pose a threat to the Russian Federation”.
NATO didn’t invade Georgia; NATO didn’t invade Ukraine. Russia did. NATO has reached out to Russia consistently and publicly over the past 30 years. We worked together on issues ranging from counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism to submarine rescue and civil emergency planning – even during periods of NATO enlargement. However, in 2014, in response to Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, NATO suspended practical cooperation with Russia. We do not seek confrontation, but we can’t ignore Russia breaking international rules, undermining our stability and security.
In response to Russia’s use of military force against Ukraine, NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups to the Baltic States and Poland in 2016. Before Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, there were no Allied troops in the eastern part of the Alliance.
In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO has significantly reinforced its deterrence and defence posture, including with four new battlegroups in the eastern part of the Alliance. At the NATO Summit in Madrid, Allies agreed that Russia is the most significant and direct threat to their security and to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area. Allies also agreed to further strengthen NATO’s posture. However, Allies remain willing to keep open channels of communication with Moscow to manage and mitigate risks, prevent escalation and increase transparency, it is written on NATO’s website.
Thus, this post is manipulating the public by sharing a headline out of context. The facts say that there is no mobilization in NATO like there is in Russia, but replenishment of weapons stocks which are depleted by deliveries to Ukraine as well as talks to continue granting military and financial aid to Kyiv.
