Social Network Post Speculates with Helicopter Accident Near Kyiv

Post on Facebook is spreading unsubstantiated and unconfirmed claims related to the recent helicopter accident in Brovary, city in the vicinity of Kyiv, in which 14 people lost their lives, including the whole leadership of the Ukrainian Ministry for Internal Affairs.

Ukrainian air defence shot down an Ukrainian helicopter with the Minister of Internal Affairs and his deputy. The helicopter crashed into a residential area, killing 16 people, including 2 children, says the post.
The post claims that Ukraine crashed the helicopter with the leadership of the Unkrainian MOA on purpose i.e., the Ukrainian air defence shot the helicopter down.
There is no evidence for such a claim, nor is that substantiated with facts. In actual fact, official data on the reasons for the helicopter’s crash is still lacking.
The helicopter accident took place early in the morning on 18th January. Officials stated that the helicopter crashed at 8:20 local time and that the building of the National Emergency Service was destroyed from the fire that spread from the crash. Fire-fighters managed to extinguish the flames an hour after that.
As they put it, the helicopter was “Aerospace AC 332 Super Puma” provided to Ukraine by France. According to the photographs from the place of the accident, the helicopter crashed in the yard of a kindergarten.
The helicopter was carrying nine persons: six members of MIA’s operational team, including the leadership of the Ministry as well as three crew members from the National Emergency Service. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Denys Monastyrskyi, his deputy, Yevhen Yenin, and the State Secretary of the Ministry, Yurii Lubkovych, were killed, reported the Counsellor of the Minister for Internal Affairs, Anton Herashchenko.
As the Ukrainain President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, informed on his Facebook profile, the rescue operation lasted for almost nine hours. Hundreds of people were involved in extinguishing the fire, searching and rescueing the wounded as well as carrying out the initial investigative actions.
25 persons were injured, out of which 11 children. 14 persons were killed, including one child. Condolences to all who lost their dearest! The Security Service of Ukraine initiated criminal investigation for this terrible event. Today, all necessary decisions were adopted related to the management of the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. We lost professional people, patriots and trustworthy managers. Minister Denys Monastyrskyi, Yevhen Yenin and their colleagues who were killed in the accident are not people that can be easily replaced. That really is a great loss for the country. Once we determine clearly the facts of what actually caused the crash, we will make the information public, wrote Zelenskyy on Facebook.
As he informed, an investigation was initiated to find out the reasons that brought about the helicopter accident and once the initial official information are known, they will be shared with the public. Hence, it is still too early to say anything related to the accident, because the investigation is ongoing.
Therefore, it cannot be concluded that the Ukrainian air defence crashed its own helicopter, as the post claims, because that would be speculating. When accidents are concerned, it is not right to speculate – one should use official information, especially when people’s lives are concerned.
