We are fact-checking a post on the social network Facebook sharing video material specifying the following in the description:

Supersonic Zircon missile carrier, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, arrived off the coast of Cuba.
In addition, the arrival of the nuclear submarine Kazan, carrier of cruise and hypersonic missiles is expected.
The distance from Havana to the American coast is 180 km.
Drills of the Russian submarine are expected in Cuban area.

The post is from the 10th of June at 12:46h.

According to the fact-checkers from Deutsche Welle, the video we are fact-checking is not from the recent arrival of the frigate Admiral Gorshkov in Cuba. It is an old video. The claim that it was released two days before the Russian submarine group even reached Havana is questionable

The four Russian naval ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine and frigate, are anchored in Cuba to take part in the planned military drills in the Caribbean. The fleet, with the frigate Admiral Gorshkov and submarine Kazan – both armed with advanced weaponry, entered the port of Havana on Wednesday morning.

The days before the arrival of the Russian warships, images and videos were circulating online, allegedly showing the arrival of the frigate “Admiral Gorshkov” in the port of Havana. That is the case with the post we are fact-checking, but the video is an old one and not from this recent arrival.

The clip shows a gray frigate coming close to the port. Typical Havana landmarks can be seen in the background such as Fort San Carlos of the Cabin and Del Puerto Avenue.

Although the video truly shows the frigate Admiral Gorshkov in the port of Havana, it is not connected in any way with the visit of the fleet dated the 12th of June. A reverse imaging search on Google as well as with Tin Eye search reveals that the video is five years old and refers to the Havana visit of the same frigate back in 2019. A longer version of the video is accessible on YouTube, released by the News Agency and the Associated Press in June 2019.

With Havana situated roughly 145 kilometers (90 miles) from the southern state of Florida, Moscow’s deployment of these vessels so close to US shores has been seen as a provocative show of force. It comes at a time when tensions seem to be rising between Moscow and Washington over Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine. US President Joe Biden recently gave Ukraine the go-ahead to use American weapons for strikes inside Russia, reports Deutsche Welle.

Based on the facts above-mentioned above, the post under review is deemed to be omitting context. While the footage shows the frigate Admiral Gorshkov in Havana harbor, it does not correspond to the fleet’s visit on the 12th of June. Despite being from an earlier date, the video was published before the frigate arrived in Havana port this year, possibly two days earlier.
