A six-year-old video was misused for spreading lies that French President Emmanuel Macron is publicly displaying a masonic symbol. The video was recorded on 16th May 2017, when Macron received the members of the International Olympic Committee visiting Paris – then a candidate for hosting the Olympic Games 2024. The sign made by Macron has nothing to do with the Masons, but it is a symbol of the Eiffel Tower in sign language

We are fact-checking a post on the social network Facebook (screenshot here) showing a video with several politicians, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who are gesticulating and forming a triangle with their hands. It is obvious that these persons are in front of a camera and photographers and that the event is covered by the media.

No more secrets. Everything is public now, states the post.

A comment under the post is clearly making reference to a masonic symbol, saying that the politicians shown in the video are Masons. The video lasts 24 seconds, but it is evident that the headline is blurred in the lower right angle i.e., the description of the event itself.

Truthmeter found the original video and saw that it has nothing to do with masonic symbols, but is related to something completely different. The video in which French President Macron is making a triangle with his hands was recorded on the occasion of the visit of the International Olympic Committee to Paris, a candidate for hosting the games in 2024. The symbol made by Macron is hand sign for the Eiffel Tower, used as the logo of Paris’ hosting of the Olympic Games.

The video dates back to 2017 when the International Olympic Committee sent its Evaluation Commission to the Elysee Palace, as part of the three-day visit of Paris. President Macron received the members of the International Olympic Committee on 16th May 2017 as a sign of support for the proposal for Paris to host the Olympics. The Commission visited Paris for three days as part of the process of deciding which city should be the host of the Olympic Games 2024. Paris was competing with Los Angeles and won. Photographs from the event in 2017 can be seen here, and it is obvious that what we see is part of the reception for the Olympic Committee. The next video shows how Paris i.e., the Eiffel Tower is spelled in sign language.

Reuters’s fact-checkers also write that the sign is not masonic.

Recently, the Macedonian Olympic Committee published an article on the upcoming Olympic Games making it clear that with the slogan “Games Wide Open” Paris 2024 will gather millions of spectators, tourists, visitors, and more than 10,000 athletes for the new era of the Olympic Games. All that will start with a remarkable opening ceremony of the Olympic Games planned for 26th July 2024 starting at 8 p.m.

Upon the occasion, Paris 2024 unveiled the torch for the next Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic torch for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris 2024 was unveiled on Tuesday, 25th July. Its designer, #MathieuLehanneur, was inspired by the three symbols of the upcoming Games: equality, water and peace! The Olympic torch will be carried by 11,000 people (10,000 from the Olympics and 1,000 from the Paralympic Games) during the relay race that will start with the initial steps of the Olympic torch in France on 8th May 2024, writes the Macedonian Olympic Committee.

Due to all of the above-noted facts, we assess this post spreading on Facebook as untrue. The gesture made by Emmanuel Macron is in support of the Olympic Games in Paris i.e., Paris to become the host of the Olympic Games 2024, which actually happened. The video is from 2017 and is not related to the masons, as the post claims. In order to manipulate the public, the headline description in the lower right angle of the video is blurred and shared to conceal the fact that the video was recorded six years ago during the visit of the Olympic Committee of Paris when the capital of France was competing to become the host of the Games in 2024, that actually happened afterward.
